As part of our Scaling the Summit project, funded by NS Status of Women, we have a Collective GBV Advocacy Working Group of diverse practitioners, advocates, and survivors. Individuals rarely achieve systemic change alone, but collective efforts do yield meaningful results.
Initiated through the work of the GBV Sector Coordination Group, acknowledging the need for collective action to address the systemic injustices of gender-based violence in Nova Scotia. This group is an intentional space to collectively identify the most urgent issues/needs for the sector from diverse vantage points and to advocate with colleagues in government to address GBV issues most effectively.
Some recent activity includes joint letters to Premier Tim Houston and other party leaders urging action after NS’s declaration of intimate partner violence as an epidemic:
As well, we have written in a coalition of GBV sector organizations and individuals to the Chair of the Progress Monitoring Committee of the Mass Casualty Commission, Myra Freeman, on the committee’s significant lack of detail and therefore transparency on implementation progress of GBV-related report recommendations:
We wait for meaningful responses on both letters.
