One billion rising for justice

Days of awareness to end violence against women and girls around the world.

On February 14, 2013, one billion people around the world participated in One Billion Rising and danced to end violence against women and girls.

It was the largest day of action in the history of the world and the South Shore was part of it.

In 2013 and 2014, Second Story Women’s Centre, sister organizations and community partners hosted community events in Lunenburg and Bridgewater aligned with the One Billion Rising global campaign to end violence against women and girls. It started in 2012 as part of the V-Day movement founded by Eve Ensler, global activist, author, playwright and creator of The Vagina Monologues. The "billion" refers to the UN statistic that one in three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime, or about one billion people.

As women, it is likely that most of us have experienced gender-based violence in one form or another at some time in our lives.  Psychological and financial abuse, stalking, harassment are also forms of violence.

It’s time we talk about it, release our stories and celebrate our strength!

One Billion Rising for Justice was the call in 2014, focusing the worlds' attention on the issue of justice for all survivors of gender violence, and on ending the secrecy and impunity that prevails everywhere across the world.

In 2018, OBR was an Artistic Uprising that invited talented artists in our community to display, perform and entertain, along with our honoured guest speakers.
